"We had brought Raich Carter Horatio Stratton "Raich" Carter (born February 21, 1913 in Hendon, Sunderland; died October 9, 1994 in Willerby, near Hull) was one of the greatest English footballers of the pre-war era. in as manager and good players like Alan Peacock Alan Peacock (born 29 October 1937, Middlesbrough) is a former English footballer.

He spent the majority of his career at Middlesbrough, also playing for Leeds United and Plymouth Argyle. , Mick McNeil Mick McNeil (born 7 February, 1940 in Middlesborough) is an English former professional footballer. During his career he made 178 appearances for Middlesbrough and almost 150 appearances for Ipswich Town. He also played for his country on nine occasions between 1960 and 1961. and Cyril Knowles Cyril Barry Knowles (born July 13, 1944 in Fitzwilliam, West Yorkshire; died August 30, 1991 in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire) was a full-back for Tottenham Hostpur and England. He was the brother of footballer Peter Knowles. had all been sold, and Brian Clough Brian Howard Clough, OBE (21 March, 1935 – 20 September, 2004) was a successful footballer and subsequently football manager, most notable for his success with Derby County and Nottingham Forest. before them.

"Raich replaced these with players from Scotland, but they were not good enough, and the team began to deteriorate.

"We were at the end of a steep decline when we went to Cardiff.

"Raich was one of the best footballers of all time, but his ideas of man management didn't work and the team suffered."

Stan Anderson, having originally arrived on Teesside as a player, was caretaker manager on that fateful night.

Gordon said: "There wasn't much Stan could do on the night.

"Fortunately the directors made the right decision in the summer and made him full time manager.

"It was the best thing that could have happened to the club at the time.

"Stan changed the whole thing around. He brought the kids through and he signed crucial players like John Hickton and John O'Rourke.

"Hickton was signed as a centre-half, but it was only later that he began to mature into a great centre-forward.

"We were third off bottom before Christmas the following season, and to go on and win promotion from that position was a marvellous achievement."

Gordon can see a link between the Boro situation of that time and today's team.

Well, we just returned from a fantastic week in Scotland, we based ourselves in the Loch Ness Inn in Lewiston on the shores or Loch Ness. It was truly a great Hotel we discovered, the staff were very friendly and courteous and the food was amazing, I would recommend this Inn to anyone! January in Scotland is brilliant, we felt we had the Highlands and Islands to ourselves, the snow capped mountains and deserted roads were a pleasure and no midgies!

Ok, I thought I better post an update about my time on the Tina Turner Tour Europe 2009. Well the first time I saw Tina was when Ike and Tina Turner supported the Rolling Stones on a tour of the UK in the Sixties, I think it was at the Globe Theatre in my hometown. The next time I remember seeing them was in 1972, as a very young roadie I was working as the drum roadie for a band called Osibisa and we supported them at The Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden New York City. they put on an amazing show and remember the Ikettes and Tina receiving huge bouquets of flowers as they left the stage. It was my first American Tour and I still remember that show as being the highlight. The next time I worked for Tina it was 1990 as a carpenter and that to date, it was one of my favourite tours ever. Since that tour I have been on all of Tina's european tours to date and this tour is a pleasure to be involved with.

In Helsinki we met up with the 3 trucks that had the "pleasure" of going to Moscow altogether there were 5 trucks loaded with the production equipment. The Scandanavian leg went well and we headed south into Germany with the weather being kind to us at this time of the year. In every city we visited we came across sold out shows and very very enthusiastic audiences. The whole tour went very well and we met our load in times at every venue.

In the past couple of weeks I have been very busy driving around Europe. I have been double driving on the Gloria Estefan tour and the Madonna tour. The fist job entailed driving from Calais to Zaragoza in Spain, flying back to the UK and then a few days later flying to Alicante in Spain and then catching a train up to Valencia and driving one of the Madonna Steel trucks to the port of Ancona in Italy were it would board a ferry to Greece. Then from Ancona I jumped into one of the Budva advance trucks and drove it down to the port of Bari in southern Italy for the ferry to Montenegro. Job done, it was time to get back to the UK. the flights from Bari were full so it was a pleasant train journey up the Adriatic coast on a Italian Euro Star train to Bologna to catch a flight to Gatwick airport England, a six hour journey that cost 53 euro, the train from Alicante to Valencia cost 23 euros. That was the cost just turning up at the stations and getting the next available train! At Gatwick Railway station I purchased a ticket to Teesside in the north of England for £107!!! it was routed via Kings Cross. Arriving at Kings Cross, I was told if I wanted to board the 15:00 train I would have to pay a surcharge of £57 that would make it a grand total of £164 for a journey half the distance I had travelled by train in Italy. But if I waited till after 19:00 hours no surcharge would be necessary. All I can say is Rip-Off Britain is alive and well.

Well I have just returned from a three week vacation in Canada, I flew from Calgary to Manchester yesterday on a very fast flight aboard a Boing 787 flying at ground speeds of upto 650 mph!8 hours wow! I always enjoy visiting North America, as I have a history of visits going back to 1972 (lost count at 25) and being based in England, I always find, going back to the Colonies is always a trip back to the future! If you get my drift!

Well I have just returned from a double drive that has lasted over two weeks and because of the new 45 hour weekly rest break for truck drivers, touring europe has changed! More and more tour trucks are double manned so costs go up and so does ticket prices and with the added cost of diesel the future looks grim! Driving out of Dover and heading up the hill to the M20 you would think you had arrived in a third world country with all the foriegn trucks parked by the side of the road and the litter and no toilet facilities the UK is certainly not a welcoming country for international or local haulage!

The concert in Valencia was the last show for Gennyworld and the day of the show we were informed that they needed the generators back in the UK in two days time. After a hectic two day drive we were back in England, tired and still suffering from inhaling the dust that was constantly being blown around the gig and the heat and the biting mossies the cool and rainy weather of England was a welcome change!

KATOWICE TO VALENCIA

I set off driving at about midnight on thursday night after the concert and headed for Valencia in Spain ( it is a long way!) I crossed the German border at Gorlitz and headed for the french border at Mulhouse stopping for a break near Hof. My next stop was near Besacon in France then on to the border town of La Jonquera in Spain, it was crowded with thousands of trucks weekending in the numerous truckstops, so I had my minum 9 hour rest stop and headed south, the french were planning a fuel protest on Monday, good luck to them, something has to be done! Driving in Europe compared to the United Kingdom is a far better experience, the germans and the french have certainly realised that trucks and their drivers are important and the autohofs and the centre routiers are to be admired compared to the total lack of facilities we put up with in the UK. Anyway I could go on and on about the british goverment and the politics of greed, so I won't. I arrived in Valencia on Sunday late afternoon in time to watch the Euro 2008 football final in a local Valencia bar close to the stadium that is home to Levante football club. Spain were the worthy winners!

SLASKI STADION CHORZOW, KATOWICE, POLAND

After three days of driving across Europe, mainly Germany, we made it to Katowice in Poland and we are at the Slaski Stadium. I have made several visits to this stadium in the past and it is being rebuilt ready for the 2012 Euro football finals. We are lucky with the weather so far as it is hot and sunny. Poland has certainly joined Europe now, the borders are open and the prices have sky rocketed!

After Saint-Etienne the next port of call for Gennyworld and the generators will be Stormont Castle Belfast, Ireland. I drove up through France without any problems and boarded the Seafrance Calais to Dover Car Ferry. Diesel prices have hit 1.55 euros per litre on the motorways of France and Germany. The french-spanish border town of La Jonquera is blockaded by striking spanish truckers my sympathy goes out to all owner operators as what the oil producers are doing is criminal, I expect its a sign of the times that governments are finding it hard to govern anymore as the global corporations of greed and greedy speculators run riot. We set off for France staight after the show in Dusseldorf, arriving in the late evening of that same day. I drove through a spectacular electric thunderstorm as I went along the Lyon ring road. Today is the day of the concert and it is a mix of sunshine and showers. The venue reminds me of an old first division English football ground.

Since the concert in Marseille we trucked up to Mannheim in Germany were the Police did an Arena show, the Generators were not used because the house power was adequate for the scaled down production. Before the show finished I set off for Dusseldorf and drove up the A3 autobahn and when hauling 40tons seemed liked a giant rollercoaster ride, up and down those German hills! The LTU Stadium has the roof closed today for the concert to protect us from the glorious German summer weather.....not!

Well we picked up the Genny's last Wednesday in England and set off for Marseille in France, I managed to get on the 8:35 pm Sea france ferry and finally parked up about 1 am Tuesday Morning. After a pleasant drive down the Autoroutes of France listening to Bob Dylan CDs most of the way I arrived at the Velodrome Stadium, Marseille at about 10 am Friday Morning. We are parked up close to the stage ready for the Police concert on Tuesday night.

Well it's good to be home after 7 months on the road Touring with The Rolling Stones, The Police and Enrique. The last couple of weeks we have been to York and Cambridge ( Xmas shopping and University interviews for one of the boys!)

After the Police Tour it was the end of gennyworld for our annual summer touring season but for me, it was time to jump into a black truck with no sensible ( well two days off) break and head for Lisbon and start the Enrique Tour, that's the third time to Lisbon in the past few months. The booking agents and management companies with the blessing of the trucking companies are having a field day, now that we are living in the expanded European onion, yes that's onion not union. Apparently you can now go from Lisbon to Zurich then to Dublin in a matter of days and the sad thing is we did!!! Double and triple driving is the future argh!!!!!!!!! Its open Borders now throughout Europe and the free passage of goods, except The Poles, The British, The Spanish, The Germans and the French seem to have forgotten that one, Schengen would be rolling in his grave if he was dead! (is he? no he is a village in Luxembourg where the agreement was signed) From December 21st Nine former Soviet bloc countries will be joining the agreement , I wonder if the harassment of truck drivers will cease, I hope so! The start of this tour was a slog but after the circus tent gig in Dublin's Phoenix Park it settled down till we got to Rotterdam, then it went from the ridiculous to the sublime! Overnight Rotterdam To Copenhagen then to Stockholm then one travel day to St. Petersburg, one travel day to Moscow then one travel day to Kiev then one travel day to Vilnius then overnight to Tallin then back to London as quick as possible! I could go on about it but it would sound like an amazing fictitious journey so I will not!! But the drivers involved all did it, there was five trucks on the tour.December 23, 2007

December 14 2007It may be worth taking extra care next time you cross a road or get behind the wheel in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.Despite the decreasing number of road deaths across the Continent, these countries' burgeoning economies have placed more cars on their roads - putting residents at increased risk of traffic-related deaths.They top Forbes.com's first-ever ranking of Europe's most dangerous drivers. The list was compiled by calculating the number of road deaths per million inhabitants in 28 European countries, using 2006 data from the European Commission and the International Road Traffic and Accident Database. It gathers data on traffic and road accidents from 28 of 30 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, a statistical clearinghouse. Turkey and Mexico are not included. We used provisional 2006 results for 12 countries that have yet to submit final data: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, Cyprus, Iceland, Slovakia, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Finland and MaCentral Europe hotspot Greece took fourth place, with island neighbour Cyprus only a few places below at number eight. But Central and Eastern Europe dominate the top 10, with Poland, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic all reporting over 100 road deaths per million inhabitants. There is, however, a big gap between these countries and Lithuania, which reported over 200 fatalities per million. It's not surprising that the three Baltic states have the worst road safety records in Europe. Breakneck economic growth over the past five years has increased consumer spending and put more cars on the road, but without any major improvement to infrastructure or increased awareness of dangerous driving."There is a lot of drinking and driving," says Agnia Baranauskaite, a Lithuanian-born analyst for the research firm Eurasia Group, in London. "Because of persistent levels of corruption and bribe taking, most people feel that they can drive drunk, even if they get caught by a policeman." European Commission data released earlier this year found that 23.5% of 2006 road deaths in Estonia were caused by those driving over the limit. For Latvia the figure was 21.7%; for Lithuania it was 14.8%. Baranauskaite says that although governments have been cracking down on drunken driving in capital cities, it is more difficult to enforce the law in smaller towns and rural areas.More rail neededDepending on the severity of the offence, those driving under the influence there may lose their licences and pay hefty fines. The increase in the number of drunken drivers on the roads could also be a result of an overall traffic increase. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the area has been flooded with foreign investors drawn by an attractive tax environment, says Dr. Friedrich Heinemann, economist with the Centre for European Economic Research, a nonprofit research institute based in Mannheim, Germany. A planned intra-country rail network should ease the situation. The Rail Baltica project is intended to upgrade Soviet-era train links between Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. However, it will not be completed until at least 2014.In the meantime, the Baltic states could learn from their Western neighbours. These mature European economies with better experience in road safety, traffic coordination and road upkeep have been able to keep their number of fatalities relatively low. France, Germany, the UK and three Scandinavian countries are in the bottom 10 of the rankings, with fewer than 75 road deaths per million inhabitants. This could have something to do with the European Union's goal of cutting annual Continent-wide road deaths by 50%, to 25,000 by 2010. It's supporting its members by circulating and funding road safety and accident data research, enacting motor vehicle legislation to regulate vehicle safety standards, and, most recently, discussing directives on infrastructure safety, says Fred Wegman, managing director of the Institute for Road Safety Research in the Netherlands.The European Union also held its first 'road safety day' this year, on April 27, to increase awareness of its goal. Although road fatalities are falling, with the EU estimating that 38,600 people were killed on its roads last year (compared with 50,437 in 2001), there is still some way to go before the 25,000 goal is reached. Well the Police tour kind of fizzled out in the the end with cancelled gigs and we ended up at Cardiff's millennium Stadium for the last gig that the genny's were needed. After the show we went to Tilbury docks and put them on a container ship heading to South America were Pablo and Pedro will be hauling them around to some, save the tree concert in the amazon jungle!

We are into the second week of our double driving extravaganza, we set off from Munich, drove to Lisbon then to Barcelona, onto Paris and now we are in Turin. Tonight after the show we head for Croke Park Dublin!, for some of the trucks its then onto Antwerp. Last Friday saw us arriving in Paris around the late afternoon and it was raining, the roads were grid locked and to drive across Paris took about three hours. There also must of been a big circus in town because there were many clowns heading for work!

MUNCHEN

Well it's a glorious day in Munich today and the sun has shone on the load in for Saturdays show. Since Amsterdam we headed for Switzerland and did a show in Geneva then the production trucks went to Vienna to do an arena show, the gennies went to Munich. The October Fest starts tomorrow but we will not be partaking as we have to double drive to Lisbon after the gig and we have only two days to do it in!

HAMBURG & AMSTERDAM

After the Twickenham shows we drove to Hamburg and the AOL Arena or to be up to date the Nordbank Arena, the home of Hamburg SV football club. After Hamburg it was down the road to Amsterdam and the Ajax Arena.

After Stockholm Gennyworld went to Aarhus in Denmark and then on to Twickenham. The generators were not needed at the NIA in Birmingham and will be not used at the indoor arena shows on this tour.

Well here we are at the biggest golf ball in the world or as it is known locally "The Globen Arena" This is the start of of the European leg of the Police Tour.

HAMBURG

Well here we are at the AOL arena in Hamburg on the day of the show and the day after, the end of tour Red Steel Crew party, it's sore heads all round for many! After the Dusseldorf show it was a relatively short drive up to Hamburg and after the show tonight it is off to Slane Castle, Ireland for the final outdoor show of this tour!

Well we are back in the Fatherland home of the world famous german sausage. If there was a world cup for sausages Germany would most probably hold the most titles with Cumbria right there behind them!

We drove from Oslo to Lausanne to do a gig, did it, and now we are in Dusseldorf.

OSLO NORWAY

We had the good fortune of having the whole of the day to drive from Copenhagen to Oslo. So I took advantage of the time to do a bit of "sightseeing" of the swedish countryside.

COPENHAGEN

The drive from Gothenburg to Copenhagen was a short 4 hours interrupted by the Helsinborg to Helsingor ferry. We arrived at the Parken stadium about 6am in the morning and started the load in immediately.

ACROSS THE BALTIC TO SWEDEN

Before our drive to Naantali to catch the Kapelskar ferry, I was privileged to witness the old traditional Finnish pastime of finding a big rock and sitting on it and staring into space

We drove non-stop apart for the legal 45min.break from Kapelskar to Gothenburg, arriving around midnight ready for a 2 am load in on show day! The weather was atrocious with the rain lashing down onto the Ullevi Stadium but the crew pulled out all the stops and by mid-day it was all up and running and as a bonus the sun came out to give us a pleasant end to the day and concert.
